Specialist Support Coordination
Specialist Support Coordination is a higher level of support coordination provided by the NDIS for participants who have more complex needs or face multiple challenges that impact their ability to implement their NDIS plan. It is designed to support participants who require intensive and skilled support to navigate and manage their NDIS services effectively.
Key Features of Specialist Support Coordination:
Complex Situations and Needs: Specialist Support Coordination is intended for participants who face significant challenges due to factors such as complex disabilities, mental health issues, involvement in the justice system, or situations where there are significant risks to their wellbeing. It addresses issues that require a more hands-on and coordinated approach.
Skilled Support for Crisis and Complex Scenarios: A Specialist Support Coordinator assists with managing crises and resolving complex situations. This includes mitigating risks, resolving barriers to accessing services, and helping to stabilise participants’ living situations or support networks.
Expert Navigation and Problem-Solving: Specialist Support Coordinators have expertise in working with complex support environments and liaising with multiple stakeholders, such as healthcare providers, government agencies, community services, and legal bodies. They help participants effectively engage with these entities and access appropriate supports.
Intensive Coordination and Capacity Building: While a primary goal is to coordinate services and resolve immediate issues, Specialist Support Coordination also focuses on building the participant’s capacity to manage their own supports over time. This includes empowering participants to understand their NDIS plan and navigate systems independently wherever possible.
Development of Resilient Support Networks: The role involves building strong support systems around the participant, often by establishing clear roles and communication channels between the different services and supports in their life. This can include formal services as well as informal networks like family and community connections.
Emphasis on Participant’s Goals and Preferences: Despite the complexity of the participant’s needs, the approach remains person-centred, prioritising the participant’s goals, preferences, and unique circumstances in all decisions and strategies.
Specialist Support Coordination is delivered by professionals with advanced qualifications and experience in handling complex cases. It’s a more intensive and skilled support coordination option provided to ensure that participants with high needs can effectively utilise their NDIS plans and achieve their goals.
